Mr. O’Brien: A Remarkable Recovery
Mr. O’Brien, 75, initially
admitted to a short-term acute care hospital for a CABG and AVR, a coronary
artery bypass grafting and an aortic valve replacement for coronary
artery disease. Postoperatively he suffered
several major complications including respiratory failure and an inability to
wean from mechanical ventilation.
Mr. O’Brien was eventually
stabilized at the acute care hospital but was unable to recover completely
during his stay. He was transferred to Kindred Hospital Northeast – Stoughton for continued
care.
Upon admission in September
to Kindred Hospital Mr. O’Brien was ventilator dependent, dependent for all
self-care and non-ambulatory. Kindred’s interdisciplinary evaluated Mr. O’Brien
and began an intensive treatment plan tailored to his complex needs.
Mr. O’Brien made remarkable
progress, weaning from the vent and building his strength to ambulate more than
100 feet with a walker, requiring only intermittent assistance with his
self-care routine. Having done remarkably well in his recovery, Mr. O’Brien was
transferred in November to a skilled nursing facility for continued therapy
before he returns home.
