Mr. J: A Return Home
Mr. J was admitted to Kindred Hospital Northeast– Stoughton with respiratory failure, a tracheotomy, uncontrolled diabetes, a feeding tube, multiple wounds, debilitation, and recovering from an esophago-gastrectomy for esophageal cancer.

He had been through several weeks of attempting to be weaned from the ventilator. None of the efforts had worked and it was assumed he would be on the vent forever.
But the treatment team at Kindred wasn’t ready to give up.
First they worked to establish a relationship with Mr. J., who was anxious and fearful about being weaned from the ventilator. Then the decision was made to deliver his physical and occupational therapy in conjunction with his respiratory therapists. Our nurses worked with the pharmacy to devise a schedule of anti-anxiety medications.
Each day, Mr. J was taken to the gym for rehabilitation and ventilator weaning, and within a few weeks he was successfully weaned. He was discharged to home.
