    Mr. G: Perseverance Pays Off

When Mr. G, a husband and father, came to Kindred Hospital Northeast – Stoughton, he was at the mercy of multiple complications related to a metastatic disease that dated to 2003.

Suffering from an abdominal sarcoma, he required a total gastrectomy, splenectomy, distal pancreatectomy and the resection of a tumor. He had impaired functional mobility and was in respiratory failure, with tracheotomy and ventilator support.

    Mr. G

Mr. G was admitted for ongoing wound care and care for a post-op infection and respiratory failure. The Kindred team began an aggressive treatment program. Mr. G received TPN for nutritional support, and was followed daily by the pulmonologist, with the goal of weaning him from the ventilator. His blood sugars were managed by the endocrinologist.

The physiatrist and wound care specialist managed his wounds. After many weeks of treatment, Mr. G was tested and given permission to swallow again. He also received comprehensive multidisciplinary rehab (physical, occupational and speech therapy) and social services. He eventually was able to ambulate independently with a rolling walker for support.

Mr. G made gratifying progress on his ventilator weaning and was successfully decannulated. His wounds had also healed satisfactorily, so Mr. G was discharged home.

At Kindred Hospital Northeast – Stoughton we are proud of the care we provide and of our customer satisfaction scores – 99.2% percent of our patients and families would recommend us to others and they rate our quality of care at 96.8%.
